Philippines women’s national team delivered a composed second-half performance to defeat Uzbekistan 2-0 in the Play-In Match of AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 at Gold Coast Stadium, Gold Coast, securing qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 in Brazil.
The Philippines started brightly, pressing high and creating early chances through Sara Eggesvik, who came close with a long-range effort that drifted just wide.
However, Uzbekistan’s resistance was led by goalkeeper Maftuna Jonimqulova, who produced a series of crucial saves — including denying Angela Beard from a dangerous set-piece situation.
Uzbekistan responded with attacking intent of their own, with Lyudmila Karachik and Zarina Mamatkarimova testing the Philippine defence, but goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel remained composed between the posts.
Despite both sides showing attacking ambition, the first half ended goalless, with Uzbekistan’s defensive discipline keeping them in contention.
The breakthrough arrived just two minutes after the restart. A pinpoint delivery from Jael-Marie Guy found Angela Beard, whose volley struck the crossbar before bouncing over the line — a goal that shifted the momentum firmly in the Philippines’ favour.
Moments later, the Filipinas doubled their advantage. Once again, Guy was the provider, curling in another dangerous cross that met Jaclyn Sawicki, who powered a looping header into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
Stunned by the quickfire goals, Uzbekistan struggled to mount a response as the Philippines controlled the tempo and saw out the match professionally.
The victory confirms the Philippines’ place at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, marking a significant achievement as they continue to establish themselves on the global stage.
Meanwhile, Uzbekistan’s journey is not over. They will have another opportunity to qualify via the Inter-Confederation Playoffs later in 2026, keeping their hopes of a maiden World Cup appearance alive.
