The question on every Malaysian badminton fan’s lips remains unanswered as Lee Zii Jia enters a critical seven-day “cooling-off” period to decide his Thomas Cup fate.
Following a “positive” sit-down with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), the professional ace has been granted a week to assess his fitness. The stakes? A chance to lead the national team in the world’s most prestigious team championship—or stay home to nurse a stubborn, recurring injury.
Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, acting as the voice of experience for BAM, revealed that Zii Jia is currently operating at less than 100%. While the injury isn’t a career-threatener, it has become a pesky “uninvited guest” that keeps returning.
“We need to understand the reality of his condition. Zii Jia admits he’s not fully fit. We aren’t here to force him, but we need to know where he stands for the sake of the team’s strategy.” — Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei
In a move that shows BAM is prioritizing the athlete over the politics, Chong Wei has suggested that Zii Jia utilize the National Sports Institute (ISN) or the National Sports Council (MSN) for his recovery.
While Zii Jia remains a professional “independent” player, the national body is essentially offering him the keys to the kingdom’s best medical facilities to get him match-ready.
Why the wait? Because a Zii Jia at 80% is often better than a squad without him. Chong Wei noted that Zii Jia’s presence alone acts as a “spiritual injection” for the younger players and the doubles pairs. His experience in the trenches of previous Thomas Cup campaigns is viewed as irreplaceable.
