Thailand’s national football team claimed their first King’s Cup title in seven years, defeating Syria 2-1 in the final of the 50th King’s Cup 2024 at Tinsulanonda Stadium, Songkhla.
This victory marks the 16th time Thailand has won the prestigious trophy, bringing joy to home fans after a long wait.
Head coach Masatada Ishii set up a formidable attacking lineup for Thailand, with Supachai Jaided leading the frontline, supported by captain Chanathip Songkrasin, Supanat Mueanta, and Ekanit Panya. Syria, under coach Jose Lana, responded with a strong lineup led by Mahmoud Al-Mawas, Ezequiel Ham, and Tobias Cervera.
Thailand dominated possession from the start and created early chances. In the 21st minute, Supanat Mueanta unleashed a powerful volley from a precise pass, but Syrian goalkeeper Esteban Gelel made a crucial save. Moments later, Ekanit Panya had a golden opportunity but struck the post with his effort in the 25th minute.
Just before halftime, Thailand finally broke the deadlock. Nicholas Mickelson charged down the right flank and delivered a perfect cross for Ekanit Panya, who tapped the ball home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break.
Syria equalized in the 53rd minute, with Ezequiel Ham capitalizing on a quick counterattack to make it 1-1, putting the match on edge. Thailand continued to push forward and made several tactical changes, bringing on Charoensak Wongkorn, Prames Ajwilai, and Supanan Burirat in search of a winner.
The breakthrough came in injury time. After a blocked shot from Chanarong Promsrikaew, the ball fell to Chanathip Songkrasin, who coolly slotted it into the back of the net with his left foot, securing a dramatic 2-1 victory for Thailand.
The win marked a historic moment for the War Elephants, with their 16th King’s Cup triumph and the first since 2017.
In the tournament’s third-place match, the Philippines secured a 3-0 win over Tajikistan.
As Thailand celebrates this long-awaited victory, they will soon turn their attention to their next challenge. The national team is scheduled to play two more warm-up matches in November 2024 during the FIFA international window, with further details on opponents and venues to be announced.
