Sabah Football Association (SAFA) President Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya has officially announced that he will step down from his position, with his resignation taking effect on January 1, 2026.
Shahelmey confirmed that a formal resignation letter was submitted to the SAFA Secretary-General last week, in accordance with the association’s constitution and established procedures.
“This resignation will take effect starting January 1, 2026, and I have submitted the official letter to the SAFA Secretary-General last week,” he said when contacted by Sabah Media on Monday.
The announcement also revealed that SAFA’s Supreme Council Members (AMT) are expected to convene a meeting in the near future to deliberate on the matter.
According to Shahelmey, discussions will focus on administrative arrangements and the future leadership direction of the association following the effective date of his resignation.
Shahelmey’s decision effectively puts an end to ongoing speculation surrounding his position within Sabah football’s leadership structure, while opening the door for broader discussions on a leadership transition within SAFA.
As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding a successor or the mechanism through which new leadership will be appointed.
With Sabah football entering a critical phase both on and off the pitch, attention will now turn to how SAFA navigates its transition period and ensures stability heading into the next chapter.
