Malaysia's women's hockey squad responded to the disappointment of missing out on the Asian Games semifinals with a commanding 3-0 victory over Indonesia in the fifth-to-eighth place classification match at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Games, held today.

The Malaysian Tigress delivered a composed and controlled performance, taking charge of proceedings from early in the contest and providing a much-needed response after their earlier group-stage elimination at the hands of South Korea.

Malaysia dominated possession and territory from the outset, with their patience eventually rewarded when Zati Alyani Muhammad Zubir broke the deadlock through a well-taken field goal in the 20th minute, giving the national squad a 1-0 advantage heading into the remainder of the first half.

The Malaysian Tigress intensified their pressure in the second half, with Khairunnisa Ayuni Mohd Sharuddin converting a penalty corner in the 41st minute to double the advantage and effectively settle any lingering doubts about the outcome.

Khairunnisa proved a persistent threat to Indonesia's defense throughout the match, striking again from a penalty corner in the 55th minute to complete a well-earned 3-0 victory and cap an impressive display of set-piece efficiency from the Malaysian forward line.

The victory keeps Malaysia's push for fifth and sixth position firmly alive, giving the national squad the opportunity to close out their Asian Games campaign on a positive note despite falling short of their semifinal target earlier in the tournament. The result represents a meaningful step toward salvaging a respectable finish from what had been a disappointing turn in the knockout stages.

Malaysia now await the outcome of the Taiwan versus Thailand encounter to determine their opponent in the decisive fifth-and-sixth-place match, scheduled to take place this Friday, October 2.
