Asian Games 2026: Malaysia Women's Hockey Keeps Olympic Dream Alive
Malaysian national women’s hockey team fulfilled expectations by advancing to the fifth-place classification match at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, dispatching Indonesia 3-0 at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries Hockey Stadium in Kakamigahara.
While missing out on the semi-finals was a setback, the victory in the classification playoff carries immense significance. A fifth-place finish is crucial for the Malaysian Tigress, as it keeps their hopes alive for a spot in the qualification rounds for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).
On the pitch, Malaysia broke the deadlock through a sharp field goal from Zati Alyani Muhammad Zubir. Khairunnisa Ayuni Mohd Sharuddin then put the game beyond reach, showcasing lethal accuracy from penalty corners by drag-flicking home in the 41st and 55th minutes.
Despite the comfortable scoreline, head coach C.R. Kumar was far from satisfied with the overall performance against Indonesia, calling on his squad to elevate their game to their true potential in the final fixture.
The Malaysian Tigress now need just one final victory to wrap up their Asian Games campaign in fifth place when they take on regional rivals Thailand on October 2.
While Malaysia remain favorites on paper, they will take nothing for granted after their last encounter against the Thais ended in a competitive 1-1 draw during the 2025 SEA Games group stage.
