Malaysia got their 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign off to a winning start after grinding out a 1-0 victory over the United Arab Emirates at the SUKPA Indoor Stadium, Kuantan.
Malaysia’s head coach Rakhpol Sainetngam opted for Syahir Iqbal Khan Akbar Khan and Harith Naim Nasir to spearhead the attack, but the first half saw few clear-cut chances.
The best opportunity fell to captain Khairul Effendy Mohd Bahrin in the 15th minute, but his shot was well saved by UAE goalkeeper Hamad Albaroud, keeping the game goalless at halftime.
Malaysia piled on the pressure after the restart, relentlessly testing Hamad between the posts, but wasteful finishing continued to frustrate the home crowd. Just when it looked like the UAE would escape with a point, Awalluddin Mat Nawi struck with only two minutes remaining, sending the fans into raptures as his decisive effort sealed the win.
Despite several late pushes for a second, the scoreline remained 1-0, ensuring Malaysia collected a vital three points.
The result places Malaysia second in Group G, trailing leaders Iran on goal difference. The win keeps Rakhpol’s men firmly in contention for qualification, setting up a crucial next test against Bangladesh on September 22.
