Stuart Wilkin "Mutual Respect" Defines Causeway Derby
Malaysia defender Stuart Wilkin addressed media ahead of Harimau Malaya's decisive FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 finale against Singapore, striking a confident yet respectful tone as he previewed a Causeway derby that carries significant weight for both nations' tournament ambitions.
Asked about the team's condition heading into the fixture, Wilkin acknowledged the physical demands of the tournament schedule while expressing confidence in his teammates' readiness. "The team's feeling good. You know, this tournament, the games come around fast, only a few days to recover, but everyone seems in good shape and looking forward to the game," he said.
The defender detailed the logistical challenges Malaysia faced in the build-up, having travelled from Jakarta to Bandung on a tight schedule ahead of the crucial encounter. "We had to travel from Jakarta to Bandung, so not easy to come here with a quick turnaround, like you said. I think everyone that's played is fully focused on recovery," he explained. "The boys that haven't played much so far are keeping sharp, and we're going to need everyone in the squad for the game tomorrow."
Reflecting on the magnitude of facing Singapore, Wilkin captured the unique blend of rivalry and respect that defines the Causeway Derby, framing the contest as a showcase for quality on both sides. "It's a huge occasion. The Causeway Derby is always a huge rivalry between the countries, but I think there's a mutual respect there that both teams have quality players," he said. "Both are quietly confident that they can win the game, so it's going to be exciting for us, the staff, the fans. It'll be a good occasion."
Turning to the tactical challenge posed by Singapore's attacking options, Wilkin singled out two players in particular as requiring close attention from Malaysia's defense. "You always look at the attacking players. We know Ilhan has quality, we know Shahrour Anwar has quality as well, so we have to be aware of them," he said.
The defender also acknowledged the broader quality within Singapore's squad, including several naturalized players familiar to him from his time competing in the Malaysian League. "As a squad, as a whole, we know that Singapore have quality players, a few naturalised players. Familiar, of course, with Safwan and Harris from the Malaysian League, so we have to be aware," Wilkin explained. "And yeah, it's going to be a good fight."
