The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) hopes not to get sanctions from FIFA due to the Kanjuruhan tragedy which claimed the lives of hundreds of Arema FC supporters, and police officers.
It is known that hundreds of people died due to the rioting of supporters and the repressive actions of the Arema FC party against Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang Regency, on Saturday night (1/10/2022).
PSSI Secretary General Yunus Nusi and PSSI Deputy Secretary General Maaike Ira Puspita admitted that they had held talks with FIFA regarding the Kanjuruhan tragedy.
“We really hope that this incident will not become a reference and foundation for FIFA,” said Yunus Nusi.
“To take decisions that are not good and not profitable for Indonesia and PSSI,”
“We are still in communication and will submit a report to FIFA that this is not a fight between supporters,” said Yunus Nusi.
“This is a riot that beats each other and fights each other,”
There are fears that PSSI will receive FIFA sanctions in the aftermath of the Kanjuruhan tragedy as in 2015.
If the punishment from FIFA is imposed, then PSSI can cancel hosting the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup in May-June 2023.
The number of supporters who died at the Kanjuruhan Stadium was thought to be due to shortness of breath due to the shooting of tear gas by the authorities and being trampled on in the crowd.
The figure for 129 people who died in the Kanjuruhan tragedy was obtained from President Jokowi on Sunday morning (12/9/2022).
