Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd, Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Malaysian Football League (MFL), has confirmed that the final list of clubs participating in next season’s of Liga Super Malaysia 2024/25 will only be determined after April 30.
With just 44 days remaining, this period is critical, especially for clubs struggling with financial instability and salary arrears. The MFL is closely monitoring teams facing financial difficulties to ensure they meet the requirements for national club licensing.
Mohd Shazli assured that the MFL remains in constant communication with the clubs involved, particularly those facing financial hurdles. He expressed confidence that all 13 existing Super League teams are capable of fulfilling the necessary conditions to remain in the competition for the new season.
On March 12, the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, hinted during a Q&A session with Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) supporters that Sri Pahang and Kedah Darul Aman might not be competing in the Super League next season. This has intensified speculation about potential restructuring within the league.
“All clubs are currently in the process of completing their licensing applications, and there are two key licensing processes to be prioritized,” Mohd Shazli told Astro Arena journalist Fadhirul Shuhaimi.
“Of course, the first is the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) licensing, which will conclude on March 31.
“The National Club Licensing will end on April 30. Any decisions regarding the league structure will only be finalized after April 30, following the meeting of the First Instance Body (FIB), which will determine which clubs have successfully passed licensing requirements to compete next season,” he explained.
If any clubs fail to meet licensing requirements, it could significantly impact the structure of the 2025/26 Super League season. The MFL’s stringent licensing process ensures financial stability and operational integrity among clubs, preventing past issues of unpaid salaries and mismanagement.
