Johor Darul Ta’Zim have made a major statement in the transfer window by officially signing Harimau Malaya striker Joao Figueiredo ahead of the 2025–26 season, reinforcing their ambition to dominate domestically and compete at the highest levels in Asia.
The Brazilian-born forward, who recently starred for the Malaysia national team in a crucial 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifier victory over Vietnam, joins JDT from Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir, where he impressed over multiple seasons.
“Joao Figueiredo brings his commitment and passion to Johor Darul Ta’zim FC,” announced the club via their official Instagram page, @officialjohor.
Figueiredo arrives with an impressive résumé, having made 102 appearances, scoring 24 goals, and contributing 4 assists for Basaksehir. His performances in the Turkish Super Lig and prior stints in Europe and Asia have equipped him with the physicality, experience, and tactical awareness needed to thrive in high-intensity competitions.
Crucially, his ability to operate both as a central striker and left winger offers head coach Xisco Muñoz tactical flexibility, enabling him to adapt formations and strategies based on opponents.
With blistering pace, powerful dribbling, and sharp finishing, Joao is expected to be a game-changer in JDT’s attacking lineup.
This signing is seen as part of JDT’s broader strategy to assert their presence on the Asian stage, particularly in the AFC Champions League Elite, where only the continent’s best compete. Figueiredo’s continental experience makes him a crucial asset as the Southern Tigers eye deeper progression in Asia.
Joao Figueiredo is the latest in a string of high-profile acquisitions by JDT this transfer window, joining names like Jon Irazabal, Antonio Glauder, Héctor Hevel, Ibrahim Manusi, Jairo, and Moussa Sidibé. The aggressive recruitment drive underlines JDT’s determination to remain unrivalled in Malaysia and to rise among Asia’s elite clubs.
