The dream is over for the Malaysian Tigress. In a high-stakes “win-or-go-home” clash at Terminal 21, the gulf in class between Southeast Asia’s elite was laid bare as Malaysia fell 8-0 to World No. 8 Thailand.
The defeat, coupled with their previous draw against Indonesia, officially ends Malaysia’s journey in the 2026 ASEAN Women’s Futsal Championship. While the Tigress showed flashes of brilliance earlier in the tournament, they ran into a “Blue Wave” that was simply unstoppable on home soil.
Entering the match knowing only a win would guarantee a semi-final berth, Malaysia attempted to weather an early Thai storm. However, the relentless pressure from the hosts saw the Tigress’ defense breach three times in the opening 11 minutes.
Goalkeeper Nursyahirah Rashid was the standout for Malaysia, pulling off a string of acrobatic saves to deny Jenjira Bubpha and Praeploy Huaipetch.
In the 3rd minute, Darika Peanpailun showed a poacher’s instinct, reacting first to a corner rebound to open the floodgates.
Suchanat Nakmai (5’) and Areeya Saetern (11’) capitalized on defensive scrambles, leaving Malaysia’s Nursyahirah Rashid helpless despite a string of brave saves.
Despite the heroics, Malaysia couldn’t handle Thailand’s set-piece clinicality, trailing 3-0 at the break.
In the second half, Malaysia’s coaching staff threw the kitchen sink at the hosts. With the score at 4-0 in the 31st minute, the Tigress transitioned into a Power Play—sacrificing their goalkeeper for an extra attacker to find a way back into the game.
Sangrawee Meekham, Jenjira Bubpha, and a clinical late double from Praeploy Huaipetch—including a long-range empty-netter against Malaysia’s power play—completed the 8-0 rout.
