The reason behind Wan Kuzain Wan Ahmad Kamal’s departure from the Harimau Malaya camp ahead of Malaysia’s ASEAN Hyundai Cup semi-final against Vietnam has finally been revealed.
The 27-year-old midfielder returned to the United States after completing Malaysia’s Group B campaign, prompting questions among supporters over his unexpected absence from the national team’s preparations for the knockout stage.
Interim Harimau Malaya head coach Tan Cheng Hoe has now confirmed that Kuzain was forced to leave the squad because of his club commitments with Sporting JAX in the United States.
Despite losing one of his midfield options for the semi-final, Cheng Hoe praised Kuzain for the positive impact he made during his first major involvement with the national team.
“Wan Kuzain is not travelling with the team to Vietnam this time because of his commitment to his club, Sporting JAX, in the United States.
“At the same time, we would like to thank Kuzain for the big contribution he made to the team.”
Kuzain was involved in all four of Malaysia’s Group B matches and made a notable contribution despite primarily being used as a substitute.
Cheng Hoe also highlighted how quickly the midfielder adapted to the squad and established a positive relationship with his teammates.
“He was also happy to be with the team for the first time. This was a good opportunity for him to show his best performances in several matches, even though he played as a substitute.
“His commitment and adaptation within the team were very good. I think all the players were happy with him and were able to play together as one team.”
Kuzain leaves the Harimau Malaya camp having made four appearances during Malaysia’s ASEAN Hyundai Cup Group B campaign.
The Sporting JAX midfielder contributed one goal and one assist, underlining his influence despite limited starting opportunities.
His performances also provided Cheng Hoe with another midfield option during the group stage, particularly with Kuzain’s ability to combine defensive discipline with distribution and attacking support.
However, his club commitments mean Malaysia must now continue the tournament without him as the team prepares for a difficult semi-final showdown against defending champions Vietnam.
