Harimau Malaya head coach Pau Marti Vicente has acknowledged the formidable challenge awaiting his team as they face defending champions Thailand in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup at Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok, tomorrow night.
Despite setbacks, the Spanish tactician remains optimistic about his squad’s readiness to rise to the occasion.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Bangkok, Pau Marti admitted the team is not at full strength due to the absence of several key players but emphasized confidence in the depth and adaptability of his squad.
“We lost some important players, but this team isn’t just about individuals—it’s about the collective effort of 26 players. Playing in an official tournament against a powerhouse like Thailand is a huge motivation for us,” Pau Marti stated.
The coach candidly admitted that with limited preparation time, major tactical adjustments are challenging, but he stressed that his players are fully committed to giving their best on the pitch.
The national squad’s preparations have been disrupted by the return of several Sabah FC players—Dominic Tan, Stuart Wilkin, Darren Lok, and Daniel Ting—who were recalled to assist their club in the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals against Kuching City FC this weekend. To compound matters, striker Syafiq Ahmad, who scored the opener in the win over Timor Leste, has been ruled out with an ankle injury.
Despite these hurdles, Pau Marti believes his team can hold their own against the War Elephants, who are renowned for their strength and technical prowess.
Currently, Harimau Malaya lead Group A with four points, following a thrilling 3-2 victory over Timor Leste and a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Cambodia. Thailand and Singapore trail with three points each from one match, while Cambodia sit on one point after two outings. Timor Leste remain at the bottom with no points.
Following the clash in Bangkok, Malaysia will return home to face arch-rivals Singapore at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on December 20, in what promises to be another pivotal match in their ASEAN Cup campaign.
With the group stage heating up and Malaysia determined to maintain their lead, fans can expect a fiercely contested encounter tomorrow night as Harimau Malaya strive to overcome adversity and take another step toward regional glory.
