Malaysia’s hopes at the BWF World Tour Finals were officially extinguished after mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei crashed out in the semi-finals, succumbing to China’s Jiang Zhen Bang–Wei Ya Xin on Saturday.
The third seeds looked in complete control early, dismantling the Chinese pair 21-9 in a one-sided opening game that highlighted their speed, precision and attacking authority.
But the match turned sharply in the second game as unforced errors crept into the Malaysians’ play. Jiang-Wei capitalised ruthlessly, flipping the momentum with an emphatic 21-11 response.
Any hopes of a late revival faded in the deciding set. Tang Jie and Ee Wei struggled to regain composure as the Chinese duo dictated proceedings, closing out the match 21-7 after nearly an hour on court.
The defeat dashed Malaysia’s final chance of reaching Sunday’s title deciders in Hangzhou. Earlier, women’s doubles world number two Pearly Tan–M. Thinaah also bowed out at the semi-final stage, leaving the national contingent without representation in the finals.
While the World Tour Finals end in disappointment, Tang Jie–Ee Wei’s presence in the last four once again underlined their status among the world’s elite mixed doubles pairs — even as consistency at the business end remains the next hurdle to overcome.
