England national football team booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 as Group L winners after a composed 2-0 victory over Panama national football team, with Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane finding the net in a dominant second-half performance.
Despite Panama’s resilient resistance in the opening 45 minutes, England’s superior quality eventually proved decisive as Thomas Tuchel’s side finished top of the group while keeping a second consecutive clean sheet.
England began brightly, with Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Kane constantly stretching the Panamanian defence.
However, Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera delivered an outstanding first-half display, producing a series of crucial saves to frustrate the Three Lions while his defenders threw themselves into countless blocks.
Panama were not content to simply defend. They threatened on several dangerous counter-attacks, with José Rodríguez forcing Jordan Pickford into an excellent save in the 26th minute before Carlos Harvey fired narrowly wide shortly afterwards.
The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0 after an entertaining opening period.
England’s relentless pressure finally paid off in the 62nd minute. Saka’s perfectly delivered corner found Bellingham, who timed his run brilliantly before powering a precise finish beyond Mosquera to hand England a deserved breakthrough.
The goal immediately shifted the momentum firmly in England’s favour.
Just five minutes later, Bellingham turned provider and produced an intelligent cross into the six-yard box where Kane arrived to calmly convert from close range, doubling England’s advantage.
With a comfortable two-goal cushion, head coach Thomas Tuchel gradually rotated several key players to preserve energy ahead of the knockout rounds.
England continued to dictate possession and created further opportunities through Rashford, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze, although a third goal proved elusive.
Panama continued battling until the final whistle and nearly grabbed a consolation through Ismael Díaz and Michael Murillo, but Pickford remained alert.
Deep into stoppage time, José Fajardo thought he had scored for Panama, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
The victory ensures England finish top of Group L, continuing their impressive defensive form with back-to-back clean sheets as they head confidently into the knockout stage.
For Panama, the defeat brings an end to a difficult World Cup campaign. The CONCACAF side exits the tournament without collecting a point after three group-stage matches but leaves having shown admirable resilience against one of the tournament favourites before England’s quality ultimately made the difference.
