Mohd Sabri Abas, Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of Terengganu FC has thrown his support behind the abolition of the MFL Cup, viewing it as an opportunity for young players to step up and compete in the first team.
Malaysian Football League (MFL) and all 13 Super League clubs unanimously agreed to scrap the MFL Cup starting from the 2025/26 season as part of a financial restructuring plan to ease club expenditures, particularly on player salaries and logistical costs.
While some believe the decision could hinder the development of young talents, Sabri strongly disagrees, insisting that clubs must now integrate youth players directly into their senior squads.
Sabri emphasized that young players must seize this chance to gain first-team experience, citing Terengganu FC’s long-standing commitment to nurturing local talent.
“It’s time for young players to be promoted to the main squad. We have always given them the opportunity to debut, and this change will only accelerate their progress,” he said.
“At Terengganu, we see this as a golden opportunity for local players to play alongside senior teammates and gain valuable experience.”
Sabri also believes the removal of the MFL Cup will push clubs to prioritize youth development by incorporating more young players into highly competitive leagues like the Super League and Challenge League.
“Without the MFL Cup, young players will now have to fight for places in the senior teams. This will ultimately raise the quality and competitiveness of Malaysian football.”
Terengganu FC’s reserve team, Terengganu FC II, previously made history by winning the inaugural MFL Cup in 2023. However, Sabri remains confident that their success in producing top young talents will continue even without the competition.
With the MFL Cup now abolished, clubs will be under pressure to strategically develop their next generation of stars. As one of Malaysia’s most youth-focused teams, Terengganu FC aims to lead by example in ensuring young players get the pathway they deserve.
