Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has officially stepped down as head coach of Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq by mutual consent, marking the end of his tenure after 18 months at the helm.
Gerrard initially took charge in the summer of 2023 and later extended his contract until 2027. However, a challenging run of results led to both parties agreeing to part ways.
“Ettifaq Football Club and Steven Gerrard have mutually agreed to part ways,” the club announced in a statement.
Under Gerrard’s leadership, Al-Ettifaq finished sixth last season in the Saudi Pro League. However, the current campaign proved more difficult, with the team slipping to 12th out of 18 teams, suffering eight losses in 17 matches.
The 44-year-old coach expressed gratitude for the opportunity and spoke positively about his experience in the country despite the challenges.
“From day one, I was treated well and was happy to be working in a new country with a different culture,” Gerrard stated. “Overall, I learned a lot and personally it was a positive experience for me and my family.”
He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football, adding, “Sometimes things don’t go as we want them to. I wish the team all the best for the rest of the season.”
The club has yet to announce Gerrard’s successor as they aim to stabilize their season and climb back up the league standings.
