Chengdu Rongcheng head coach Seo Jung-won has acknowledged that his team faces a major challenge when they take on Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) in the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26 (East Zone) League Stage, but vowed that his side will give their all despite a packed schedule and physical fatigue.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference alongside defender Gan Chao, Seo stressed that while the team has had little recovery time, every player understands the significance of competing at this elite level of Asian football.
“For the AFC Champions League, our team has always placed great importance on this competition. It means a lot to us — this year marks our very first participation,” said Seo.
“We’ve played two matches so far with one win and one loss. All our players are fully aware of the importance of this tournament. Although the tight schedule has impacted our fitness levels, we’ll approach tomorrow’s match with the utmost seriousness and fight with everything we have.”
Seo acknowledged the formidable quality of their Malaysian opponents, who reached the AFC Champions League Elite Round of 16 last season and have been consistent contenders in recent years.
“Johor Darul Ta’zim are a strong and well-organized side,” he continued. “They have great depth, high overall quality, and strong tactical discipline. We just played a league match two days ago, so naturally some of our players are fatigued. To address that, we’ll make some adjustments to both our lineup and tactics. Still, no matter what, we’ll give our best and fight to win this crucial match.”
The Korean coach, who has guided Chengdu to impressive progress both domestically and continentally, described the AFC Champions League Elite as the ultimate proving ground for Asian clubs.
“Competing in the AFC Champions League is always a high-intensity challenge,” Seo said. “Everyone knows this tournament gathers the best teams from across Asia, each with incredible strength and competitiveness.”
“With more foreign players allowed in the competition, the game tempo is faster, and the level of physical and tactical confrontation is higher. Against such strong opponents, we must prepare thoroughly — with detailed analysis, well-planned training, and scientific tactical organization. Our philosophy is to never back down, no matter who we face.”
Seo added that his staff have been closely studying JDT’s style of play through video analysis to ensure Chengdu approach the match with discipline and structure.
“We’ve analyzed their key movements and transitions. Tomorrow, our aim is to play as one united, well-organized team. I believe our players are fully ready and will bring maximum fighting spirit on home soil.”
Team captain Gan Chao echoed his coach’s sentiments, emphasizing that despite fatigue, the players are mentally ready for the challenge ahead.
“The league season is entering its final stretch, and it’s a very crucial time for us,” said Gan. “Playing in the AFC Champions League while competing in the domestic league is physically demanding. But this tournament represents the highest level in Asia — it means a lot to us.”
“Every player knows how difficult it is to get here, and now we have the chance to play at home. We’ve prepared well and have only one goal — to fight with everything we have and win this important match.”
Gan also noted how the international competition helps elevate the team’s performance back home.
“Compared to the domestic league, AFC Champions League matches are faster and more intense,” he explained. “That higher tempo challenges us, but it also helps us grow. When we return to the league, we feel more comfortable and confident in our rhythm.”
