PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda team has officially announced that Malaysian riders Khairul Idham Pawi, popularly known as KIP, and Muhammad Helmi Azman will take the coveted wildcard slots in Moto2 at the 2024 Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia.
This high-profile announcement fuels excitement for the local crowd, as the two Malaysian talents join the international Moto2 field at the Sepang International Circuit for MotoGP’s final Asia-leg race.
Speculation around the wildcard slots began yesterday with a teaser video showing two riders in PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda gear, hinting at the possibility of Japan’s Kaito Toba joining KIP. Fans were left guessing as helmet designs in the teaser matched both Toba’s and KIP’s styles, both currently competing in the World Supersport (WorldSSP) series. However, the official announcement at 3 PM today confirmed KIP’s slot alongside Helmi Azman, delighting Malaysian racing enthusiasts.
PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda expressed its excitement, posting: “PETRONAS Wild Card Alert! We’re thrilled to announce two exciting wildcard riders joining our Moto2 lineup at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia 2024 – none other than Malaysia’s very own Khairul Idham Pawi and Muhammad Helmi Azman.”
KIP, known for his fearless riding style, is currently competing in WorldSSP and will team up with Helmi Azman, who represents the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team in the Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC). Both riders bring substantial experience, with KIP having competed in Moto3 and Moto2 in the past, while Helmi has built a solid track record in ARRC, making this an ideal lineup for a thrilling weekend on their home turf.
