Star City FC’s search for a maiden Unifi Liga Super Malaysia 2026/27 win goes on after being held to a 1-1 draw by Terengganu FC in a tightly fought contest at Stadium Tuanku Syed Putra, Kangar.
Mehmed Durakovic named his strongest available lineup for Star City, with Rizal Ghazali and Rafael Vitor forming a solid wall at the back. Terengganu, meanwhile, made several changes to their starting XI, with Romel Morales handed the responsibility of leading the line and hunting for goals.
The match began at a modest tempo, with both sides struggling to break down each other’s tightly organised defences, making for a contest defined more by discipline than danger in the opening stages.
Neither team managed a genuine goalscoring opportunity until the 40th minute, when Terengganu’s Romel Morales rattled the crossbar with a fierce strike. The rebound fell kindly to Elvis Kamsoba, but his follow-up effort was smartly held by Star City goalkeeper Farhan Majid.
Morales came close again in stoppage time at the end of the first half, unleashing a shot from outside the box, though it proved comfortable enough for the goalkeeper to deal with. The two sides went into the break locked at 0-0.
Star City emerged from the tunnel with renewed purpose, taking control of proceedings through crisp, well-structured passages of short passing.
The breakthrough everyone had been waiting for arrived in the 55th minute. Douglas Oliviera calmly latched onto a defence-splitting through ball from Pedro Santos, first beating Shahrul Nizam before slotting a deceptive finish past Terengganu goalkeeper Suhaimi Husin to make it 1-0 to Star City.
Stung by the setback, Terengganu responded by cranking up the pressure, quickening the tempo of their attacks as they pushed for an immediate response.
Star City nearly doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute when Azfar Fikri found himself clean through, one-on-one with the goalkeeper. With the goal gaping, though, the forward could only lift his effort over the crossbar — a chance he’ll want back.
Terengganu made Star City pay for that miss just four minutes later. Romel Morales was on hand to turn home a simple finish from a looping free-kick delivery in the 77th minute, levelling the score at 1-1. The goal wasn’t without controversy, as the referee took several minutes to review the incident before finally confirming it stood.
Both sides continued to push for a winner in the closing stages, but the 1-1 scoreline held firm until the final whistle, leaving the points shared.
The draw leaves Terengganu holding steady in sixth place in the Super League table, while Star City — still searching for that elusive first win of the campaign — remain stuck second from bottom.
