Motorsport.com has reported that Kuala Lumpur is emerging as a strong contender to host the MotoGP Season Launch for the 2026 season, with the final decision from rights holder Dorna Sports expected in the coming days.
The MotoGP Season Launch serves as the official pre-season event, gathering riders and teams for media sessions, promotional activities, and fan engagement ahead of the opening race. In 2025, the event made its debut in Bangkok, Thailand, marking the first time it was held in Southeast Asia outside of a race weekend.
Kuala Lumpur offers several compelling advantages for the 2026 edition. The Malaysian capital boasts world-class logistics infrastructure, extensive local motorsport expertise, and a proven track record of hosting MotoGP-related events. The Sepang International Circuit, the country’s premier motorsport venue, is located just a short drive from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) – a key convenience for teams, officials, and media.
Malaysia also enjoys a long-standing relationship with MotoGP, having hosted the Malaysian Grand Prix for over two decades. This enduring partnership positions Kuala Lumpur as a natural choice for the Season Launch, especially as the sport continues to expand its presence in Southeast Asia.
Clarity on the 2026 launch venue is expected to follow Thursday’s International Road Racing Teams Association (IRTA) meeting, where the provisional winter testing calendar will also be discussed. Current indications suggest that the first official winter test will be held at Sepang in early February 2026, shortly after the Shakedown Test.
If confirmed, the Kuala Lumpur Season Launch would set the stage for a high-energy build-up to the 2026 MotoGP season, potentially drawing global media attention and further cementing Malaysia’s reputation as a motorsport hub in Asia.
