Iran national football team has been granted permission to enter the United States two days before their decisive FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage fixture against Egypt, following a relaxation of travel restrictions by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
According to the Associated Press, the decision was confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday, offering Iran additional time to prepare for one of their most important matches of the tournament.
However, U.S. authorities also confirmed that Iran will still be required to leave the United States immediately after Friday’s match in Seattle, with the temporary easing of restrictions applying only to their arrival schedule.
A spokesperson for the Iran Football Federation (IFF) confirmed that the national team will leave its training base in Tijuana, Mexico, on Wednesday before travelling to Seattle.
The move provides head coach and players with valuable extra time to recover, acclimatise, and prepare after previously facing significant logistical challenges during the tournament.
Andrew Giuliani, Executive Director of the White House World Cup Task Force, told the Associated Press that the adjustment had always been part of the tournament’s operational plan.
“This was always part of our planning. We intended to evaluate how the team’s first two trips went, and if everything proceeded smoothly, we would allow them an additional day before the third match because of the longer travel distance.”
Iranian football officials had previously voiced concerns over the travel limitations imposed on the team following the outbreak of conflict in the region.
For Iran’s opening two World Cup matches, both played in Los Angeles, the squad was only permitted to enter the United States one day before kickoff, limiting preparation and recovery time.
In addition, just weeks before the tournament began, Iran was forced to relocate its main training camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Mexico, while several federation officials and members of the team’s support staff were reportedly denied entry into the United States.
Although arriving one day before matches complies with FIFA regulations and is common practice for many teams, Iran’s coaching staff had requested additional time to adapt to host-city conditions and aid player recovery between matches.
Following Iran’s goalless draw against Belgium, captain Alireza Jahanbakhsh publicly expressed his hope that the team would be allowed to travel to Seattle earlier.
“We are not asking for anything extraordinary. We simply want the same process that has been provided to the other 47 teams participating in the tournament,” Jahanbakhsh said.
“Hopefully, everyone who supports and works alongside the team will also be able to remain with us.”
The additional preparation time could prove significant as Iran prepare for a pivotal Group G encounter against Egypt, with qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage potentially on the line.
After navigating logistical and travel challenges throughout the opening phase of the tournament, Iran will finally benefit from a more conventional match-week schedule as they aim to keep their World Cup dream alive in Seattle.
