As preparations intensify in Bangkok for a crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers showdown, Declan Lambert has delivered an honest and determined assessment of the current mood inside the Malaysia national team camp.
The defender, who represents Kuala Lumpur City at club level, highlighted the fierce competition within the squad as players battle to impress the coaching staff ahead of the Group F encounter against Vietnam national team.
Lambert pointed to a highly competitive environment across all positions, particularly in defense, as a driving force behind improved performances.
“There’s a lot of competition. There’s a very strong group of players, especially in my position. There’s banter, but it’s also real competition. You have to show your best in training and impress the coaches.”
This internal battle, he believes, is essential in raising the overall quality of the squad as Malaysia looks to remain competitive at the continental level.
Coming off a demanding domestic campaign with Kuala Lumpur City, Lambert admitted that fighting near the top of the table has brought both excitement and pressure.
“It’s a new experience with KL fighting for second place. It’s nice, but there’s also added pressure.”
Still, the defender remains confident in his individual form.
“I think I’ve been doing alright. I’ve been playing well, so I want to keep that consistency.”
While Malaysia’s qualification hopes may be out of reach, Lambert stressed that the upcoming clash against Vietnam still carries massive importance.
“It’s tough because Malaysia are out, but it’s still an important game. We want to show we can compete and beat these teams. It’s about showing our pride as Malaysians.”
With Vietnam arriving in strong form, the match presents a chance for Harimau Malaya to restore confidence and send a statement to the region.
Lambert also reflected candidly on the physical demands of professional football, acknowledging the challenges of maintaining peak condition.
“It is very disappointing. Getting older is not fun. I just have to stay healthy and fit—then focus on the next camp.”
