Iran national team passes to Quarter-Final after beating Syria national team in the penalties shoot-out scoring 5-3 after tied 120 minute 1-1 in the AFC Asian Cup 2023 Round of 16 at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium.
In this match, Iran was the side that was open to attacking Syria and got the opportunity.
In the 34th minute, Iran awarded a penalty after Aiham Ousou conceded a foul to Mehdi Taremi, and the referee decided to penalty; and Mehdi Taremi converted to the goal, Iran led 1-0.
In the remaining time of the first half, there was no additional score, ending the first half with Iran leading 1-0.
In the second half, in the 64th minute, Syria awarded a penalty after the referee checked VAR and found Alireza Beiranvand conceded a foul to Pablo Sabbag in the penalty box, and Omar Khrbin converted the goal; Syria equalizer 1-1.
Iran struggled in the 90+1 minute following Mehdi Tarmi’s conceding foul to Alaa Al Dali, got the second yellow card to a red card, and sent off Iran’s remaining 10 players.
The remaining time had no additional score, ending both tied 1-1 and continued playing in the extra time.
In the extra time, both sides had opportunities to goal but no additional score, ending both tied 1-1 and continuing to penalty shoot-out to find a winner.
In the penalty shoot-out, Iran shot to the goal with all 5 players, and Syria had 1 player Fahd Youssef’s shot to save. Iran won 5-3 in the PSO and passed to the Quarter-Final.
In the Quarter-Final, Iran will face Japan.
