Iran national team made a surprised reach to semi-final after beating Japan national team scoring 2-1 in the AFC Asian Cup 2023, Quarter-Final at Education City Stadium.
The situation did not cause problems for Japan when they led the game with a quick attack before Hidemasa Morita finished calmly in the 28th minute.
Iran tried to apply quick pressure but the action of the half ended with the advantage of Japan.
Continuing the second half, both teams actively launched moves, with the squad managed by Amir Ghalenoei appearing more confident.
The long-awaited goal finally arrived when Iran’s sensational winger, Mohammad Mohebi, managed to score the equalizer against Zion Suzuki.
Iran continued to attack and put pressure on the Japanese defense machinery but was thwarted by Suzuki.
Extra time of 4 minutes changed the outcome of the match after Iran was awarded a penalty kick which was completed by the captain of the team, Alireza Jahanbakhsh.
In the remaining time, no additional goal, ending Itanwinning 2-1 and advancing to the Semi-Final.
In the Semi-Final, Iran will face a winner between Qatar and Uzbekistan.
