Malaysia’s men’s hockey team concluded their FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup 2025-26 campaign on a positive note after producing a resilient performance to defeat Scotland 4-2 in the fifth-place playoff on Saturday.
Despite missing out on a place in the semi-finals earlier in the tournament, the Speedy Tigers showcased their fighting spirit by overcoming a spirited Scottish side to secure fifth place, providing a timely confidence boost ahead of future international assignments.
Malaysia made the perfect start when experienced forward Faizal Saari calmly converted a penalty stroke in the eighth minute to hand his side an early advantage.
The lead was doubled in the 19th minute through Muhammad Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal, who capitalised on a defensive lapse with a clinical field goal to put Malaysia firmly in control at 2-0.
Scotland, however, responded strongly after the interval. Jamie Golden reduced the deficit with a penalty corner in the 32nd minute before David Nairn levelled the contest at 2-2 with a well-taken field goal in the 44th minute, swinging momentum in favour of the Europeans.
Instead of folding under pressure, Malaysia responded immediately.
Just one minute after conceding the equaliser, Mohamad Akhimullah Anuar Esook restored the Speedy Tigers’ lead with a composed field goal in the 45th minute, reigniting Malaysia’s challenge.
Azrai then sealed both the victory and an impressive personal performance by converting another penalty stroke in the 50th minute, completing his brace and extending Malaysia’s advantage to 4-2.
The two-goal cushion proved decisive as Malaysia comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to claim a deserved victory.
Although Malaysia fell short of their ambition of challenging for the Nations Cup title, the fifth-place finish offers several encouraging signs for head coach Brendon Carolan and his squad.
The tournament highlighted the continued development of the team’s younger players while the attacking unit demonstrated improved efficiency in crucial moments. Malaysia also showed resilience throughout the classification matches, bouncing back strongly after earlier setbacks.
Ending the campaign with consecutive victories provides valuable momentum as the Speedy Tigers shift their focus towards upcoming international competitions and continue building towards future major tournaments.
With experienced leaders such as Faizal continuing to deliver alongside emerging talents like Azrai and Akhimullah, Malaysia leaves Cape Town with renewed optimism despite missing out on the medal rounds.
