It was a night of high drama between Terengganu FC and Selangor FC played out a pulsating 1-1 draw in their 2025/26 Liga Super Malaysia at Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium, Gong Badak.
Terengganu FC handed a debut to new import striker Gervane Kastaneer, while Selangor entrusted Kalamullah Al-Hafiz between the sticks and Malaysian sensation Faisal Halim with the captain’s armband.
The match ignited instantly with both sides trading blows at a frantic tempo. Kastaneer almost had a dream start in the 15th minute, but his goal-bound header drifted wide.
The stadium erupted in the 19th minute when Akhyar Rashid pounced on a defensive lapse to find the net. However, the celebrations were cut short; a VAR review adjudged Akhyar to have committed a foul in the buildup, leaving the scoreline level.
Terengganu’s persistence finally paid off in the 42nd minute. Captain Careca took matters into his own hands, unleashing a venomous left-footed strike inside the box that left Kalamullah rooted to the spot, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
The Red Giants emerged for the second half with renewed vigor. Head coach Nidzam Jamil introduced new signing Hugo Boumous to inject creativity, and the shift in momentum was immediate.
In the 57th minute, the talismanic Faisal Halim clinicaly finished a sweeping move to level the scores at 1-1, sparking relief on the Selangor bench.
However, the tide turned again in the 73rd minute. Debutant Hugo Boumous went from hero to zero, receiving a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Kastaneer. Down to ten men, Selangor were forced into a defensive shell.
Terengganu sensed blood in the closing stages. Engku Shakir unleashed a thunderbolt from distance in the 77th minute, but Kalamullah Al-Hafiz produced a world-class save to keep Selangor level.
At the other end, despite being a man down, Chrigor Moraes nearly snatched a dramatic winner for the visitors in stoppage time, only to be denied by the agility of Terengganu custodian Rahadiazli Rahalim.
The 1-1 draw means Selangor maintain their narrow lead over Kuala Lumpur City FC in the race for second place, though they will rue the missed chance to extend the gap to four points.
