Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King created a breakthrough moment in their careers by winning their first-ever BWF World Tour title at the Macau Open 2024.
The world No. 24 duo stunned Indonesia’s eighth-ranked pair, Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani and Sabar Karyaman Gutama, in straight sets 22-20, 21-18 after a grueling 79-minute showdown at the Macau East Asian Games Dome.
The final was marred by frequent interruptions due to a leaking roof, with rainwater dripping onto the court and requiring mopping after nearly every point. Despite the challenging conditions, Wan Arif and Roy King remained focused and resilient to seal a historic victory.
As champions of the BWF World Tour Super 300 event, the Malaysian pair will pocket US$29,230 (RM125,128), while the Indonesian runners-up walk away with US$14,060 (RM60,188).
This triumph marks a significant milestone for Wan Arif and Roy King, signaling their rise as a formidable force in international badminton and providing a much-needed boost for Malaysia’s men’s doubles scene.
