Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has officially appointed Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin as the new Head Coach of the Women’s Singles department, a pivotal move aimed at revitalizing the national women’s singles programme.
A former national shuttler and celebrated figure in Malaysian badminton, Iskandar returns to BAM with a rich blend of international experience, proven coaching credentials, and a deep passion for the sport that once made him a household name.
Iskandar’s illustrious playing career includes:
- Double silver medals at the 2009 BWF World Junior Championships (Boys’ Singles & Mixed Team),
- A bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games in the team event,
- Runner-up finish at the 2016 Malaysia Masters in Men’s Singles,
- And a crucial role in Malaysia’s 2016 Thomas Cup bronze-winning squad.
Following his retirement from competitive play, Iskandar transitioned seamlessly into coaching. His most recent stint in Europe saw him helm Ireland’s national singles programme, where he made a major impact—guiding two Irish singles players to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics. His European journey sharpened his perspective on elite player development, which now comes full circle as he returns to elevate Malaysia’s women’s singles scene.
BAM Director of Singles, Kenneth Jonassen, welcomed the appointment with enthusiasm:
“We are pleased to welcome Iskandar back to BAM in this important role. His international coaching stint, combined with his background as a national player, brings a valuable blend of experience and perspective.
Our Women’s Singles squad is in a crucial phase of transition, and we believe Iskandar is the right person to guide the players, helping them build belief and resilience while pushing for consistent performances on the world stage.”
Expressing gratitude and renewed purpose, Iskandar shared:
“It feels great to return to BAM—not as a player this time, but as a coach ready to give back. My journey in Ireland taught me so much, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to apply those lessons here.
I see great potential in our Women’s Singles players. My focus will be on building their confidence, sharpening their tactical and physical awareness, and supporting them to break through internationally.
I would like to thank BAM for the trust and opportunity—it means a lot to be able to contribute to the sport I love, in the place where it all began for me.”
Iskandar Zulkarnain will officially assume his new role on 1 October 2025 at PETRONAS Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM).
