Manchester United are set to make a long-awaited return to Malaysia for the first time in 16 years, taking on the ASEAN Stars at the iconic Bukit Jalil National Stadium on May 28. The fixture is part of United’s post-season tour, which also includes a stop in Hong Kong.
The last time the Red Devils graced Malaysian shores was in 2009, when they played two thrilling matches against Harimau Malaya at the same venue. In the first encounter, United edged past the national team 3-2 before securing a 2-0 victory two days later. Since then, Malaysian fans have been eagerly awaiting the club’s return.
United’s visit will mark the first time an English Premier League (EPL) club has played in Malaysia since Liverpool’s 2015 friendly against a Malaysia XI led by Datuk Dollah Salleh, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Red Devils will arrive in Kuala Lumpur under Ruben Amorim’s leadership, following a turbulent season in the Premier League. United finished a disappointing 14th place, narrowly avoiding a relegation battle with just 16 points separating them from the drop zone. Despite their struggles, this tour presents an opportunity for the club to rebuild confidence and connect with their passionate Asian fanbase.
