Perak FA claimed a crucial advantage in the 2025/26 Piala Malaysia Round of 16 after securing a 2-0 victory over Kuala Lumpur City in the first-leg encounter at Stadium MPM, Manjung.
The Bos Gaurus lined up with Syazwan Syazany guarding the goal, while Kamal Arif Azrai wore the captain’s armband. KL City, meanwhile, entrusted Quincy Kammeraad between the posts, with Zhafri Yahya leading the side and Kpah Sherman spearheading the attack for The City Boys.
Perak FA started on the front foot, launching a series of early attacks that immediately put the KL City defence under pressure. Their positive approach paid off in the 11th minute when Daniel Hakimi opened the scoring after latching onto a superb long pass from deep, sparking celebrations among the home supporters.
Buoyed by the breakthrough, Perak FA continued to press for more goals to the delight of the crowd in Manjung. KL City did manage to create several promising chances through Zhafri Yahya and Fazrul Amir, but they were unable to find the equaliser.
As the first half progressed, Perak FA maintained control and created a host of clear-cut opportunities, heading into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.
The home side showed no signs of slowing down after the restart. Their persistence was rewarded in the 53rd minute when Fadhil Azmi doubled Perak FA’s advantage, finishing calmly after receiving a well-delivered free-kick.
KL City attempted to respond immediately, with Paulo Josue coming close in the 56th minute, but his effort was safely gathered by Perak FA goalkeeper Syazwan Syazany. Despite pushing forward late in the game, including a powerful attempt by Safawi Rasid in the 87th minute, The City Boys could not breach the Perak defence.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-0 victory for Perak FA, placing them in a strong position ahead of the second leg.
Both sides will meet again in the return leg of the Malaysia Cup Round of 16 at Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium on January 25, where KL City will be aiming to overturn the deficit on home soil.
