Malaysian men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, secured the bronze medal after defeating the Danish pair Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen in the men’s doubles badminton event at the Olympics 2024, held at Porte de La Chapelle Arena, Paris.
The first set saw the Danish pair leading 11-8 at the interval. Despite the national pair’s efforts to catch up, Astrup-Rasmussen ended the first set with a 21-16 result in 21 minutes.
The second set was highly competitive, with both pairs exchanging points. The Malaysian duo led 11-9 at the interval, but the Danish pair managed to level the score at 13-13. Under pressure, Aaron-Wooi Yik staged a remarkable comeback from 16-20 to win the second set 22-20.
The third set was intense, particularly towards the end. The national pair allowed the Danish pair to chase up to 19-19 but remained composed to clinch the bronze medal with a 21-19 victory.
Earlier, both pairs missed out on the finals after losing their respective semi-final matches. Aaron-Wooi Yik fell to the world number one pair, Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang, 19-21, 21-15, 17-21, while Astrup-Rasmussen lost to the defending champions from Taiwan, Lee Yang-Wang Chi-lin, 21-18, 17-21, 10-21.
Aaron-Wooi Yik previously won the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020, defeating the experienced Indonesian pair, Mohamad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan, 17-21, 21-17, 21-14.
