Terengganu FC has announced the mutual termination of Marin Pilj’s contract, marking the end of the Croatian midfielder’s stint with the East Coast club. The decision was confirmed through an official video statement shared on Terengganu’s social media platforms.
The club acknowledged that parting ways with Pilj mid-season was a challenging move but emphasized that it was made in the best interest of both parties. Pilj, 27, struggled to adapt to life in Malaysia, his first professional experience in Asia, which affected his performance and overall contribution to the team.
“The club previously gave space for Marin Pilj to try to attend and practice as usual, but it is clear that this player cannot give the commitment as expected,” read the club’s statement. “The management sees it as a serious matter because it has a negative impact on both sides, the player and the team, and an immediate decision needed to be made.”
Expressing gratitude for his time with Terengganu, Pilj extended his well-wishes to the club and its players.
“I wish the club and all the players good luck. Hopefully, they achieve the best results in the Malaysian League (M League),” Pilj remarked, reflecting on his time with the team.
Since joining the squad, Pilj made 16 appearances, scoring two goals and providing one assist. While his contributions on the field were appreciated, his inability to settle off the pitch ultimately led to the decision.
Pilj’s departure makes him the second foreign player to leave Terengganu this season. Earlier, Dutch center-back Matthew Steenvoorden also parted ways with the club under similar circumstances.
The termination of Pilj’s contract signals a period of adjustment for Terengganu FC as they look to reinforce their squad for the remainder of the 2024/25 Malaysian League season. Fans and management alike hope this move will pave the way for a more cohesive and competitive team moving forward.
