MotoGP star Marc Marquez shared his insights after a challenging Friday practice session at the Americas Grand Prix, where wet track conditions played a major role in shaping the day’s events.
Despite an early crash, the Spanish rider remains optimistic about his performance and approach heading into Saturday’s qualifying sessions.
“It was a special condition, the track was wet. I found myself comfortable from the beginning. Of course, everything can change in a split second. As we saw this morning, I was overconfident—overconfident because there was too much water on the track, and I made a ‘water plan’ in Turn 2, which calmed me down a little bit. So we have to be as focused as ever. Tomorrow everything will be more intense, but I will not lie to you—the ‘feeling’ today was good, like the first and second races in Argentina, which is what we expected.”
Reflecting on his crash, Marquez admitted that it was a result of his own mistake, emphasizing the importance of learning from such incidents.
“At first, none of the riders understood the crash, but some things have happened before. But then, when I analyzed calmly, I exaggerated a little bit. That is not the first crash. Tomorrow the track will be dry, and I criticize myself for those mistakes because that is the way to improve. But this happens, and it happens when you are overconfident, and when you come from a victory, from a great weekend. That is why I always use careful words, because it helps me stay 100 percent focused. Mistakes like the one this morning happen when we do not expect them and can have serious consequences.”
Looking ahead, Marquez stressed the importance of Saturday’s qualifying sessions and understanding the true pace of the competition.
“Tomorrow we will understand clearly where each person is, how much of a gap there is, or if someone is faster. Today is a day where you have to be very confident or you have to suffer a lot. You have to be very fast or you lose two seconds every time and you don’t know why. So tomorrow, we must be very careful and try to understand where we are in Q2, which is the key point. That’s where we can be at the front. That’s the target.”
