Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia’s title pursuit took a hit at the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia following a third-lap crash in the Tissot Sprint. At Turn 9, a minor adjustment to his approach had significant consequences.
Reflecting on his crash, Bagnaia explained, “I came into the corner a bit later than usual, hit the bump at the top, and lost the front. I’ve taken that line so many times and never crashed – until now. There’s always a first, though it couldn’t have come at a worse time.”
The crash marks another in a series of Saturday setbacks that have affected his standings in the championship race. “All the mistakes and points I’ve lost happened in Sprint races,” he admitted. While Bagnaia has performed strongly in full races, this season’s format has seen him consistently cede points in the Sprints, an area where Jorge Martin has excelled. “It’s a shame, but Jorge’s done better on Saturdays, and we have to give him credit for that.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s main race, Bagnaia remains determined. “I’ll give it my all, as always. I hope Marc [Marquez] and Enea [Bastianini] can stay close because, worst case, Jorge could finish second with no real competition.”
Bagnaia recognizes that, despite his efforts, he’ll need more than just a win to narrow Martin’s 29-point lead, acknowledging that “winning alone isn’t enough – we need something extra.”
The title battle is set to intensify as Bagnaia aims for victory in Malaysia, while Martin prepares to capitalize on a potential match point in what has been a high-stakes MotoGP season.
