Reigning MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin will miss this weekend’s ThaiGP 2025 after suffering a fresh injury while training on Monday, Aprilia has confirmed.
Martin had already endured a challenging start to the 2025 season following a heavy crash on the first day of the Sepang test. The incident resulted in multiple fractures, requiring surgery and forcing him to miss the remainder of pre-season testing.
Aprilia had hoped that Martin would recover in time to compete in the season-opener at Buriram. However, those plans were derailed when he fractured his left hand during training ahead of his scheduled departure for Thailand.
Martin will undergo surgery on the latest injury and is out indefinitely as doctors assess his recovery timeline.
A brief statement from Aprilia confirmed the extent of Martin’s injuries and the decision to substitute him with test rider Lorenzo Savadori for the Thai Grand Prix.
“Jorge Martin suffered a complex fracture of the radius, some carpal bones on the left side, and an ipsilateral calcaneal fracture during a training session,” the statement read. “After a surgical consultation, it was decided to proceed with surgery, which will take place tomorrow at the Dexeus Clinic in Barcelona to stabilize the fractures of the radius and the left scaphoid.
Martin will miss the Thailand Grand Prix, and recovery times will be determined after surgery. Lorenzo Savadori will replace Martin in Thailand.”
Martin’s absence from the opening round of the 2025 season marks the first time a reigning champion has failed to start the following campaign since Freddie Spencer in 1984.
The Spaniard made history last year by becoming the first rider from an independent team in the modern era to win the world title. Initially, he was set to join Ducati’s factory squad for 2025, but a public refusal by Marc Marquez to take a works bike at Pramac led to a shake-up, with Martin ultimately signing a two-year factory deal with Aprilia.
Despite the setback, Martin will run the number one plate on his RS-GP. He had already played down expectations of a title defense in 2025 as he adapted to his new machine, and this latest injury further complicates his plans for the season ahead.
