Sumardji, Indonesia national team manager confirmed that the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) plans to send U23 squad to compete in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 later this year, as the senior national team will prioritize the FIFA World Cup 2026 Asian Qualifiers, Round 3.
“The senior Indonesian national team agreed yesterday to have the U23 team play in the 2024 ASEAN Cup, as approved by the association president and head coach Shin Tae-yong. The head coach is still Shin Tae-yong, and the senior national team’s goal will be to focus on the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, but for the ASEAN Cup, it depends on whether the clubs will allow the players to be released.” Sumardji said.
Recently, Indonesia U23 national team created a surprise by qualifying for the final round of the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup for the first time and made it to the semi-finals. They won a ticket to compete in the 2024 Olympic men’s football playoff round before losing to the Guinea national team, unfortunately missing out on the Paris Games.
ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 will take place from November 23 to December 21, 2024. Indonesia is in Group B with Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos.
