Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has announced for suspension of Zulkarnain Zakaria from refereeing in Liga Super Malaysia 2023 after a mistake in interpreting two penalty kick situations in the match between Sabah FC vs Penang FC at Likas Stadium, Kota Kinabalu on 17 March 2023.
In this match, Zulkarnain Zakaria 1st referee of the match gives 2 penalties for Sabah FC in the 41st minute and 90+9th minute. and ended at Sabah FC win by a score of 5-2
“The FAM Referee Performance Evaluation Committee led by FAM Deputy President, Dato’ S. Sivasundaram as Chairman of the FAM Referee Committee held a meeting yesterday to examine the report from the Referee Evaluator of the match as well as video clips of each incident,” FAM said in an official statement.
“The FAM Referee Performance Evaluation Committee has unanimously found that the referee of the match, Zulkarnain Zakaria, has made a mistake in interpreting two penalty kick situations by him to the Sabah FC team at minute 41 and minute 90+9.”
“Accordingly, the FAM Referee Committee has decided to impose an immediate suspension on Zulkarnain Zakaria from refereeing any Malaysia League 2023 match.”
“The FAM Referee Committee takes this matter seriously and will give a stern warning and reprimand to all referees to always be optimal in carrying out their duties with a more holistic understanding of football.”
“The committee will also not hesitate to take strict and appropriate action against any referee who displays a quality of judgment that does not meet the standards that have been set in the upcoming Malaysia League 2023 matches.”
