Portugal’s national team demonstrated superior accuracy and composure in a penalty shoot-out, defeating Slovenia national team 3-0 after a goalless 120 minutes in the UEFA EURO 2024 round of 16 at Frankfurt Arena, Frankfurt.
Under the management of Roberto Martinez, Portugal fielded a strong lineup featuring Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Cristiano Ronaldo leading the attack. Both teams created opportunities in the first half but couldn’t break the deadlock as defenses held firm.
In the second half, Slovenia had a golden chance in the 61st minute when Benjamin Sesko found himself one-on-one with the keeper, but his shot narrowly missed. Portugal, ranked 4th in the world, struggled to find their rhythm and couldn’t convert their chances, leading to extra time.
Portugal’s luck seemed to turn in the 105th minute when they were awarded a penalty, but Ronaldo’s shot was brilliantly saved by Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak. In the 115th minute, Sesko again posed a threat with another one-on-one opportunity, bypassing veteran defender Pepe, but was thwarted by Portugal goalkeeper Diego Costa.
The match went to a penalty shoot-out, where Diego Costa emerged as the hero by saving all three of Slovenia’s attempts. Portugal’s Ronaldo, Fernandes, and Silva converted their penalties with precision, securing Portugal’s place in the quarter-finals.
Portugal is set to face France in the quarter-finals this Sunday.
