Italy’s national team advanced to the round of 16 after tying Croatia’s national team, scoring 1-1 in the UEFA EURO 2024 Group Stage, Group B at RB Arena, Leipzig.
Croatia, under the guidance of Zlatko Dalic, fielded a star-studded lineup including Luka Modric, Mario Pasalic, Andrej Kramaric, and Mateo Kovacic. Italy, led by Luciano Spalletti, responded with an attacking trio of Giacomo Raspadori, Mateo Retegui, and Lorenzo Pellegrini.
The most significant opportunity in the first half came in the 28th minute when Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni’s header was superbly saved by Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
With Croatia needing a win, they intensified their efforts in the second half. Their persistence paid off when they were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute. However, Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma heroically saved Luka Modric’s spot-kick.
Undeterred by his missed penalty, Luka Modric quickly redeemed himself a minute later, capitalizing on a rare mistake by Donnarumma to put Croatia ahead 1-0.
Just when Croatia seemed poised for victory, Italy struck back in stoppage time. Mattia Zaccagni, receiving a precise pass from Riccardo Calafiori, scored the equalizer to secure a 1-1 draw.
