England national team passed to the semi-final after winning Switzerland national team in the penalty shoot-out scoring 5-3 after tied in 120 minutes 1-1 in the UEFA EURO 2024 quarter-final at Düsseldorf Arena, Düsseldorf.
England fielded a formidable attacking lineup featuring stars like Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, and Jude Bellingham. Both teams played cautiously in the first half, but England, ranked No. 5 in the world, dominated possession.
The second half saw Switzerland, under coach Murat Yakin, ramping up their offensive efforts. The breakthrough came in the 75th minute when Breel Embolo capitalized on a mistake by England defender John Stones to give Switzerland the lead.
England responded swiftly, with Bukayo Saka equalizing five minutes later with a stunning goal from outside the penalty box. The match remained level at 1-1 until the end of regular time, forcing the game into extra time.
During extra time, England nearly took the lead when Declan Rice’s accurate shot in the 95th minute was saved by Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Switzerland also had a close call when Xherdan Shaqiri’s corner kick hit the goal post.
The match proceeded to a penalty shoot-out where all England players converted their penalties successfully. Switzerland’s defender Manuel Akanji’s penalty was saved by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, sealing England’s victory.
