Newly appointed interim head coach Christophe Gamel has vowed that his short preparation time with Selangor FC (SFC) will not be used as an excuse ahead of their must-win AFC Champions League Two 2025/26 Group G clash against Lion City Sailors at Bishan Stadium tomorrow.
Gamel, who only had four days with the squad and two full training sessions, urged his players to give their all as the Red Giants seek their first points in the competition.
“I cannot complain. Our duty is to try and make it work regardless of the circumstances, and I believe in my players,” Gamel said at the pre-match press conference.
“We will see how they respond because we currently have no points. Tomorrow is crucial to begin our campaign properly. We must build this team day by day, and the first step is to secure three points.”
The Frenchman acknowledged that several key injuries have complicated matters but stressed that the squad has shown promising quality and spirit.
“It is not easy with limited time and injuries, but I see a good group of players. I want them to play with full responsibility, respect the opponent but never fear them.
We know Lion City Sailors are a strong side, top of the group, but we come with a clear mission to get points,” he added.
Selangor FC sit bottom of Group G after losing their opening match to Bangkok United. A victory against the Sailors is vital to keep their hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds alive.
For the record, Gamel was appointed last week as interim head coach following the decision to rest Katsuhito Kinoshi, whose inconsistent results prompted the club to seek a new direction.
