Australia U16 national team secured 3rd title of this tournament after winning Thailand U16 national team by the penalty shoot out 8-7 after tied in 90 minutes 0-0 in the ASEAN U16 Boys Championship 2024 Final at Manahan Stadium, Solo.
Thailand, which appeared dominant in the first half, managed to open the lead in the 33rd minute. The goal that changed the score to 1-0 was scored by Poramet Laoongdi.
Meanwhile, Australia, who were under constant pressure, managed to equalize in the first half’s injury time. Quinn MacNicol’s shot from outside the penalty box went into the corner of the goal guarded by Supakorn Poonphon, changing the score to 1-1.
Thailand and Australia attacked each other in the second half. They played very openly to find the winning goal.
In the 56th minute, Australia got a chance through Anthony Didulica. Unfortunately, Didulica’s shot from inside the penalty box was still too weak and was easily secured by the Thai National Team goalkeeper.
Anthony Didulica had changed the score to 2-1 in the 76th minute. Didulica’s header from a loose ball in the penalty box was converted into an empty net. However, the goal was disallowed by the referee after VAR observation. Didulica was considered to have handled the ball before the goal occurred.
The second half ended 1-1. In the penalty shootout, Australia players were able to perform better and beat Thailand.
