Malaysian sensation Arif Aiman Hanapi stands on the brink of history as the AFC Player of the Year 2025 will be revealed tonight at the AFC Awards Riyadh 2025 presented by NEOM, held at the King Fahad Cultural Center in Riyadh.
The 23-year-old Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) forward has already etched his name into Malaysian football folklore by becoming the first Malaysian ever shortlisted for the prestigious continental honour — and only the second Southeast Asian nominee since Thailand’s Therdsak Chaiman in 2003.
Arif’s nomination crowns a stellar year in which he delivered outstanding performances both domestically and on the continental stage, guiding JDT to another Liga Super Malaysia title and impressing in the AFC Champions League Elite. His fearless attacking play, creativity, and leadership have cemented his status as one of Asia’s brightest young stars.
Speaking ahead of the awards ceremony, Arif expressed deep pride in carrying Malaysia’s hopes and representing Southeast Asia on the biggest stage.
“I always give my best for my club and country, and I am excited to be the first Malaysian to be here,” said Arif. “It’s just the beginning for me. I must prepare to work harder and dedicate myself to reaching the same level as Salem and Akram. I will take them as my role models and take responsibility for myself to reach the highest levels.”
Arif’s competition for the award is formidable — Akram Afif, Qatar’s AFC Asian Cup 2023 hero and reigning AFC Player of the Year, and Salem Al Dawsari, Saudi Arabia’s inspirational leader who starred in his nation’s FIFA World Cup campaign.
Regardless of the outcome, Arif’s presence among Asia’s elite symbolizes a new era for Malaysian football, showcasing the nation’s growing reputation in the Asian game. His nomination has ignited pride among fans back home and reaffirmed JDT’s role as a breeding ground for world-class talent.
