Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing may have fallen short of the China Masters 2026 title, but the Malaysian professional mixed doubles pair walked away from Shenzhen with a major statement of intent.
The world No. 85 Malaysians battled hard against China’s world No. 1 pair Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping before losing 19-21, 16-21 in a 50-minute final.
Despite the defeat, their runner-up finish at the Super 750 tournament represents the biggest achievement of their partnership since joining forces in March, while the result is expected to propel them into the world’s top 50.
For a relatively new combination, it is a breakthrough that could change the trajectory of their World Tour campaign.
Pang Ron and Pei Jing entered the China Masters with a clear objective, but few could have expected their campaign to end with a place in one of the biggest finals of the World Tour.
They produced four consecutive victories in Shenzhen before meeting Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping in the title decider.
Their remarkable run also represented another significant milestone for Pei Jing, who reached her first World Tour final with Pang Ron since the pair began their partnership.
The Malaysians had previously reached the semi-finals of the Macau Open in June, but their China Masters run marked a substantial step forward.
Pang Ron previously reached the China Masters 2024 final with Cheng Su Yin, where he also finished runner-up after losing to the same Chinese opponent.
Two years later, Pang Ron returned to the same tournament’s final — this time with Pei Jing — showing his continued ability to perform on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
