Australia delivered one of the early surprises of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after producing a disciplined and clinical performance to defeat Turkey 2-0 in their opening Group D encounter at BC Place Stadium, Vancouver.
Despite entering the tournament with a higher FIFA ranking, the Socceroos were considered underdogs against a Turkish side packed with European stars, including Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Arda Güler, Merih Demiral and veteran striker Burak Yılmaz.
However, Australia showcased tactical discipline, defensive resilience and deadly efficiency on the counterattack to secure a memorable victory and three valuable points.
The opening stages saw both teams adopt a cautious approach, although Turkey gradually assumed control of possession and dictated the tempo.
Just as the European side appeared to be gaining momentum, Australia struck with devastating effect.
In the 26th minute, rising star Nestory Irankunda demonstrated his explosive pace and attacking quality, racing past two Turkish defenders before calmly finishing beyond goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır to hand Australia a 1-0 lead.
The goal stunned Turkey and shifted the pressure firmly onto their shoulders.
Turkey responded aggressively and nearly equalised through defender Abdülkerim Bardakcı, whose powerful effort was brilliantly saved before crashing against the crossbar.
Australia nearly doubled their advantage before halftime, but Çakır produced another important save to deny Irankunda’s second effort, leaving the Socceroos with a narrow 1-0 lead at the break.
Turkey emerged from halftime with renewed urgency and continued to push for an equaliser.
The creativity of Arda Güler and the introduction of Kenan Yıldız injected fresh energy into the Turkish attack, forcing Australia to defend deep for extended periods.
A curling effort from Güler in the 57th minute appeared destined for the corner before goalkeeper Beach produced an excellent save to preserve Australia’s advantage.
At the heart of Australia’s resistance was towering defender Harry Souttar, who marshalled the backline superbly and repeatedly thwarted Turkish attacks.
While Turkey dominated possession, Australia remained dangerous whenever opportunities arose in transition.
Their decisive second goal arrived in the 75th minute. A loose touch in midfield allowed Australia to launch another swift counterattack, with Connor Metcalfe seizing possession before driving forward. The midfielder cut inside confidently and unleashed a clinical finish to make it 2-0 and silence the Turkish supporters.
Despite relentless late pressure, Australia maintained their composure and defended superbly to secure a clean sheet and one of their most impressive World Cup victories in recent years.
The victory provides a huge confidence boost for Australia as they begin their Group D campaign in style.
More importantly, it puts the Socceroos in a strong position ahead of a blockbuster clash against tournament co-hosts United States on June 20.
Turkey, meanwhile, will need a response when they face Paraguay on the same day to keep their qualification hopes alive.
