Australia U20 women’s national team moved within touching distance of the knockout stage at the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 after a commanding 5-0 victory over India U20 women’s national team in their Group C clash at Pathum Thani Stadium, Pathum Thani.
A sensational hat-trick from Skye Halmarick, combined with goals from Danella Brutus and Daisy Brown, powered the Young Matildas to their second consecutive win, putting them on the brink of qualification for the quarter-finals.
The side coached by Alexandros Epakis will now face Japan, a regional giant, in their final group-stage match on Wednesday to determine the Group C standings.
Both teams started cautiously, probing for openings during the early exchanges. Australia created the first real opportunity in the 10th minute when Brutus burst through the Indian defence, but she lost control inside the penalty area as the ball rolled harmlessly out of play.
India nearly stunned their opponents in the 20th minute when Anju Chanu attempted a long-range free kick, but her strike drifted narrowly over the crossbar.
Australia gradually began to dominate proceedings, with Shelby McMahon producing a dazzling solo run that sliced through the Indian defence before Bhumika Khumukcham eventually cleared the danger.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 39th minute after Cindy Colney fouled Brutus inside the box, allowing Halmarick to calmly convert the resulting penalty.
Just a minute later, the Australian striker doubled the advantage by heading home a precise cross from Peta Trimis, leaving Indian goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem with no chance.
Halmarick completed her hat-trick shortly after the restart in the 48th minute, curling a superb effort into the top corner after being set up by Avaani Prakash.
Australia continued their relentless pressure and added a fourth goal just before the hour mark when Brutus won possession from Chanu, surged past three defenders and slotted home with composure.
India managed to prevent further damage temporarily thanks to Shruti Kumari, who cleared a dangerous Halmarick effort off the line.
However, Australia capped off their dominant display in the closing minutes when Brown fired home from inside the box to seal an emphatic 5-0 triumph.
Despite back-to-back defeats, India remain mathematically in contention to progress but must defeat Chinese Taipei in their final group match.
