Nualphan Lamsam, the President of the Football Association of Thailand, has confirmed that Silva Mexes, a 15-year-old Thai-Welsh rising star from the Manchester United U16 team, is set to join the Thailand U17 national team for the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2025 in Saudi Arabia, scheduled from 3-20 April 2025.
The Football Association of Thailand revealed that contact with Mexes has already been established, and the player has expressed his readiness to join the training camp with the Thailand U17 squad in February 2025. This aligns with his family’s plans to return to Thailand, during which his personal documentation will also be finalized. “Madam Pang” Nualphan Lamsam and the association have pledged full support and assistance to ensure the young talent’s smooth transition.
Mexes, who hails from a mixed heritage, is half-Thai and half-Welsh. His mother is originally from Nakhon Sawan Province, Thailand. Known for his versatility as a forward and winger, the young prodigy has been making waves in English football. Having previously played for Ipswich Town, Mexes recently joined the Manchester United Academy, donning the iconic number 7 shirt in the U16 team—a squad that also includes Kai Rooney, son of England football legend Wayne Rooney, who is currently the manager of Plymouth Argyle in the Championship.
The AFC U17 Asian Cup 2025 is a crucial tournament that will determine the eight best teams from Asia, with the top two teams from each of the four groups advancing to the FIFA U17 World Cup 2025 in Qatar, scheduled for 5-27 November 2025.
Mexes’ inclusion is expected to boost Thailand’s chances at the continental championship, as they aim not only for success in Saudi Arabia but also to secure a spot in the global tournament in Qatar. Football fans across Thailand are eagerly anticipating the rising star’s debut in the national colors, hoping he will bring the same flair and skill that has made him a standout talent at Manchester United.
