Manchester United’s post-season tour turned into a public humiliation on Wednesday night as a disjointed and uninspired side fell to a 1-0 defeat against a ASEAN All-Stars, prompting boos and early exits from the 72,550-strong crowd at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
The stunning result deepens the crisis for Ruben Amorim, who is under increasing scrutiny after overseeing United’s worst Premier League finish since 1974 (15th place). The performance in Kuala Lumpur did little to quiet critics, with the Red Devils again toothless in attack, sloppy in possession, and lacking urgency in sweltering 32°C heat.
The final whistle was met with boos ringing around Bukit Jalil, and some fans began heading for the exits before full time—a rare sight for a club that still enjoys massive popularity in Southeast Asia.
“The boos from the fans – it’s something that we need. These people believe in Manchester United no matter what the context. It’s our duty to improve the team.”
“We were slow. We don’t yet have the hunger to win every game. We need to build that.” He added.
The team now travels to Hong Kong for the final leg of their Asia tour post-season, where they’ll face a local selection side on Friday.
